#1 - When you are lifting very heavy, think Maximal Effort method, you can hold your breath to make the lift (easier). When you hold your breath, you increase the tension in your thorax and abdomen muscles. Also, blood pressure in the carotid artery increases, which is believe to increase motor unit recruitment. Tensing of the muscles allows your body to move on a more stable and stronger foundation. The breath can only be held around ~2.5seconds until it becomes unsafe. This is called the Val Salva Manoeuver, which is named after an Italian anatomist.
#2 - Any athlete looking forward to competing seriously should start their weight room work with bodybuilding training. This adheres to the maxim, "a bigger muscle is a stronger one". It also creates more growth in tendon attachments and bone dimensions. This is an important milestone to many young athletes because any type of maximum strength work in the future will be very dangerous if not for the improved qualities. Plyometrics have a very high loading so the augmented tendons, bones, muscle will handle the landing/loading better.
